The Chinese government, in an effort to welcome foreigners from all over the world to China, released a series of policy measures in the first half of 2024 to facilitate the arrival of expatriates in China.

24-hour visa-free transit policy
China implements a 24-hour transit visa exemption policy for foreign citizens from all over the world. The entry and exit ports implement a 24-hour transit visa exemption policy.
Foreign citizens holding valid international travel documents and a connecting flight ticket with confirmed seats who transit through China by international flight, ship or train to a third country or region, are exempt from visa requirements and stay in China for no more than 24 hours and stay in the corresponding port. Personnel who plan to leave the port must apply for a temporary entry permit from the entry and exit border inspection agency of the corresponding port.
72-hour or 144-hour visa-free transit policy
At present, China has implemented a 72-hour or 144-hour transit visa exemption policy at 38 entry and exit ports in 18 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.
A 72-hour or 144-hour transit visa exemption policy is implemented for foreigners from 54 countries.
54 countries:
Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
*Foreigners from these countries must hold valid international travel documents and connecting flights. Foreigners from these countries holding valid international travel documents who are transiting through China to a third country or region within the specified period can apply for visa-free transit at the entry-exit border inspection agency at the port of entry. The entry-exit border inspection agency will process their applications and approve temporary entry for eligible foreign citizens. The stay of each foreign citizen starts at 0:00 on the day after entry.
